Original piece designed especially for Pure Laine's 2022 Advent Calendar and now available in kit form.
Jennifer Beale always names these patterns after places in Newfoundland and Labrador, and Rioux is a section of the Trailway just outside Clarenville, Newfoundland. But it's also the name of a town in France! The centerpiece of Rioux in France is the Romanesque church of Notre-Dame de Rioux. Romanesque churches are particularly famous for the use of corbelled tables in their architecture. She attempted to replicate the 3D corbel tables used in the church's architecture in the 2D Fair Isle corners that support Rioux's shawl centerpiece.
And while it may look like steeking or solid jacquard, it's not! Fair Isle is knitted in the round, so that the jacquard right side is always visible.
